Tissue decay tested in modern Metasequoia leaves: Implications for early diagenesis of leaves in fossil Lagerstätten

چکیده
Sedimentary deposits yielding extraordinarily-preserved fossils (known as Lagerstätten) may provide significant insights into the physiology and environments of ancient plants, particularly when represent their original characteristics with limited diagenetic modifications. To better understand molecular, isotopic, morphological changes during early stages diagenesis, degradation experiments were conducted in two time series: 1) a laboratory decay series using fungi on leaves over course month 2) natural collected from different leaf senescence diagenesis. Both used modern dawn redwood Metasequoia glyptostroboides, referred to “living fossil” due stability genus past 100 million years. demonstrate that microbial polysaccharides occurs extremely short timescales results cell collapse, first exclusively cellulose-based primary walls then much later lignin-strengthened secondary walls. Despite molecular changes, stable carbon isotopic composition bulk n-alkanes remained virtually unchanged. Together, these findings suggest that: rapid burial tissue stabilization is essential formation Lagerstätte fossils, play key role maintaining three-dimensional fossil structures thus polysaccharide preservation implies minimal degradation, 3) isotope signals, including at level, altered little Thus, interpretations physiological environmental signals conifer Lagerstätten are not likely impacted by

what miller wants is a theatre of heightened consciousness. he speaks of two passions in a man, the passion to "feel" and the passion "know". he belives that we can have more of the latter. he says: drama is akin to the other inventions of man in that it ought to help us know more and not merely to spend our feelings. the writing of the crucible shows us that he is trying to give more heightene...

The ultrastructural examination by transmission electron microscopy of 45-million-year-old mummified leaves of Metasequoia extracted from the Upper Coal member of the Buchanan Lake Formation in Napartulik on Axel Heiberg Island revealed the preservation of intact chloroplasts and chloroplast components. Abundant tanniferous cell inclusions may indicate that the 3-mo period of constant daylight ...

متن کاملUsing fossil leaves as paleoprecipitation indicators: An Eocene example
Estimates of past precipitation are of broad interest for many areas of inquiry, including reconstructions of past environments and topography, climate modeling, and ocean circulation studies. The shapes and sizes of living leaves are highly sensitive to moisture conditions, and assemblages of fossil leaves of flowering plants have great potential as paleoprecipitation indicators. Most quantita...
